You can help your child become a better reader with everyday activities:
- Look up words together in the dictionary while reading
- Take your kids to the library and get them their own cards
- Let your child see you reading for fun; you are his/her primary influence
- Watch educational TV programs that teach phonics
- Reinforce schoolwork by showing interest in the topics that are being covered
- Don't tell your child what you know about the subject; let him/her do the talking
- Find reasons to write
- Encourage your child to write thank you letters after a party. Spend a few extra minutes preparing your errands by letting him/her write out a shopping list.
- Teach your child good learning skills.
- Be a good listener yourself: take turns talking and give your child a chance to express his/her thoughts clearly.
